Do You Have a Biodegradable Phone Case?

Pela is on a mission to create a waste-free future, one phone case at a time.

What is Pela?

Pela was founded by Jeremy Lang in 2008. While on vacation in Hawaii, he saw firsthand the damage plastic was doing to the environment. Since then, plastic pollution has only gotten worse. The Hawaii Wildlife Fund (HWF) estimates 15-20 tons of marine trash wash up on the shores of Hawaii every year. In response, Jeremy began to experiment with materials to find an alternative to plastic that could replace everyday products for the ultimate impact.

With approximately 1.6 billion plastic phone cases discarded in landfills every year, Pela settled upon replacing the plastic in phone cases, ensuring it prioritizes sustainability and toxin-free materials in all its products. Jeremy's mindset defined his business model: "If we can make products at a higher standard to keep our family and planet safe, shouldn't we?"

What environmental issues does Pela solve?

Pela primarily addresses plastic waste, which poses a significant threat to our oceans and environment. By developing products from environmentally sensible materials, Pela is actively reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainability one phone case at a time.

Does Pela's goods serve human or planetary needs?

Human Needs:

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), there are more than 8.58 billion mobile subscriptions in use worldwide. Phones are arguably an integral part of human needs, sitting right next to housing and clothing. Pela is so impactful because it responds to a need that comes as a result of phones being a human necessity. Phones need to be protected, and Pela proves this need can be met in a sustainable way that can have a good impact on the environment instead of destroying it.

Additionally, Pela's products are designed to protect phones without introducing harmful toxins into your home. They are tested to be free of BPA, lead, cadmium, and phthalates, ensuring that they keep you safe as well.

Planetary Needs:

By replacing traditional plastic with sustainable alternatives, Pela helps reduce the overall plastic waste in the environment. The company's commitment to sustainability extends to its goal of removing 10 billion pounds of waste from the waste stream by 2028.

What happens to a Pela product at the end of its life?

Can it be integrated into a circular economy?

Pela's products are crafted from biodegradable materials designed to break down naturally, reducing the environmental impact compared to traditional plastics. At the end of its life, a Pela product can be composted, allowing it to naturally break down and return to the earth without leaving harmful residues. This supports a circular economy by reducing waste and promoting the reuse of materials.
